Contest for Space Force Non-Commissioned Officer Advancements Grows More Intense
Space Force's Promotions: A Mixed Bag for Senior NCOs in 2024
Witness the rollercoaster ride of promotions the Space Force's senior NCO corps experienced in 2024. As promotion statistics and selected Guardians were revealed on Nov 21, the results weren't as sweet for senior NCOs compared to their junior peers.
Here's the breakdown:
- Achieving the prestigious rank of Chief Master Sergeant, 14 candidates were chosen from a pool of 68 eligible Guardians, boasting a promotion rate of 20.6%.
- For the Senior Master Sergeant rank, 25 candidates were selected from a staggering 435 eligible Guardians, resulting in a 5.75% promotion rate.

This year, while the number of promotions to Chief Master Sergeant has remained steady at 14-15 Guardians since 2019, the pool of eligible Guardians has seen continual growth. This cycle yielded 68 eligible Guardians, a record high. As a consequence, the promotion rate witnessed its lowest since Space Force's maiden cycle in 2020. Back then, only 2 out of 8 senior master sergeants were selected.
Remarkably, the average service time of those promoted fell below 20 years, landing at 19.42 years, a record low since the Space Force's inception.
The competition to attain the rank of Senior Master Sergeant is gaining ground with each passing year. With a pool of 435 eligible candidates, 2024 marked a record high and a 33.3% increase from as recently as 2022. Concurrently, the Space Force is selecting fewer candidates for promotion, even when considering the small sample size. The number of promotions dwindled from 35 in 2022 to 30 in 2023 and a record-low 25 in 2024, resulting in the lowest promotion rate ever for this rank.
This year's promotion rates deviate sharply from the middling NCO tiers within the Space Force. Back in June, the Space Force announced promotions for 95.66% of eligible Guardians to the rank of Sergeant and 63.87% to the rank of Technical Sergeant, both all-time highs for these ranks in the Space Force's short tenure. However, the promotion rate for Master Sergeants dipped to 21.34%, foreshadowing the lower rates for senior NCOs.
In September 2023, Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force, John F. Bentivegna, revealed ambitious plans to reshape the career paths for the 4,900 enlisted Guardians. Changes may span every aspect, from recruitment to tech school to career advancement, a term Bentivegna prefers over promotion[1]. This project aims to further develop the Space Force's personnel and readiness.
Adding to the complexity, the Space Force is planning to integrate Air Force Reservists into its ranks, forming a single component where Guardians can work on a part-time or full-time basis[3]. The Space Force is still refining the HR systems for this change and finalizing the promotion system that will come along with it.
