Winning Classes Announced in Media Literacy Quiz for Neuwied Schoolchildren

In the digital age, young people must understand the nuances of media use. Recognizing this need, the Youth Office of Neuwied incorporated a media literacy quiz into their 2025 school holiday calendar distribution. The quiz, geared towards students in grades 3 to 6, aimed to test their knowledge on responsible internet behavior.

The questions posed to the 45 participating classes from various primary and secondary schools in Neuwied included topics like cyberbullying and handling uncomfortable or unusual online interactions. Students who answered all questions correctly stood a chance to win attractive prizes, courtesy of Stadtwerke Neuwied and Sparkasse Neuwied.

A random draw determined the winners. The 4d class from the Geschwister-Scholl-Grundschule emerged victorious, securing a class trip to Neuwied Zoo. The 6th grade of the Rudolf-Steiner-Schule finished second, receiving €80 for their class fund, while the 5a class of the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium clinched third place with a prize of €50 for their class fund. All other participants were rewarded for their efforts.

"Our goal with this quiz was to sensitize children to the issues surrounding the internet and media use, and to encourage understanding of the challenges and risks in the digital world," explains Tanja Buchmann from the Child and Youth Protection unit of the municipal youth office. An impressive 41 out of the 45 participating classes answered all questions correctly, suggesting a promising foundation for safe digital media use among Neuwied schoolchildren.

Although not directly related to the main topic, it is worth noting that George Meredith, a prominent author, received his education at the Moravian School in Neuwied. However, this anecdote does not pertain to the media literacy program or quiz prizes.

The media literacy quiz, designed to promote responsible internet behavior among Neuwied schoolchildren, also aimed to foster personal growth and learning about the intricacies of media use in the digital age. Achieving this educational and self-development goal was evident as 41 out of 45 participating classes demonstrated a solid understanding of cyberbullying, uncomfortable online interactions, and other relevant topics.
