Boeing Opens New Engineering Center, Bolstering Daytona Beach's Tech Ecosystem

Boeing has expanded its footprint in Florida with the launch of a new Engineering Center at Embry‐Riddle Aeronautical University's Research Park. The center, spanning 65,000ft, supports engineering design, research, development, and prototyping for Boeing Defense, Space & Security Air Dominance programs.

The center, opened in 2014, is anticipated to create approximately 400 high-paying jobs in Daytona Beach and Volusia County, further strengthening the Research Park's technology ecosystem. This ecosystem brings university researchers and students together with businesses, entrepreneurs, and start-ups across aviation, aerospace, cybersecurity, commercial space, and other STEM fields.

P. Barry Butler, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University president, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that it will cultivate a dynamic exchange between students, faculty, and industry leaders, ensuring innovation thrives at the intersection of education and enterprise. Dan Gillian, vice president and general manager of Boeing Air Dominance, echoed these sentiments, stating that the center will accelerate Boeing's work on critical defense programs and deepen its partnership with Embry‐Riddle.

The addition of Boeing further bolsters the Research Park's reputation as a hub of innovation and technological advancement. The center reinforces Boeing's long-term investment in the Daytona Beach region.

Meanwhile, in other news, Woodward Inc, a global leader in energy control solutions for aerospace and industrial markets, has announced plans to build a precision manufacturing facility in Greer, South Carolina, in Spartanburg County.

Elsewhere in the aerospace industry, Orbex has successfully completed its first full simulation of the Prime vehicle launch, marking a key technical milestone as it prepares to deliver orbital launch services from the UK next year.

In the UK, the defense sector is failing to capitalize on transformative manufacturing capabilities that could revolutionize supply chain resilience and cut costs by £110m. On a more positive note, Greater Manchester has emerged as a UK hotspot for 3D printing adoption, according to new government research.

Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and BAE Systems FalconWorks have formed a strategic partnership to jointly develop a new generation of uncrewed autonomous air systems. Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of RTX, has secured an $18m contract from the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to sustain TF33 engines.

It's important to note that Boeing is a global company operating in the Defense Industry. The company is also making significant strides in corporate social responsibility. Boeing is investing $100,000 to support new STEM programming for the Boys & Girls Club of Volusia/Flagler counties and to provide food for students in need through the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

The Embry‐Riddle Research Park has been a significant driver of economic activity for the state, creating nearly 2,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs and generating more than $372m in total economic impact in Florida. The park continues to attract leading companies in the aerospace and technology sectors, contributing to Florida's growing reputation as a hub for innovation and technological advancement.
