Black Artisans in Innovation: Gwen Kelly and the Push for Pullman Porters' Advancement

During this year's Black History Month celebration, the spotlight is on Gwen Kelly and her groundbreaking work on a campaign for American Family Mutual Insurance in 2002.

Gwen Kelly, a prominent figure in the advertising industry, led the project, which is now being hailed as a significant milestone in her career. The campaign aimed to celebrate and recognize Black history and talent, and it has left a lasting impact on the industry.

Adweek, a leading voice in advertising, is also highlighting Kelly's work as part of their partnership with Ad agency owner Derek Walker. Walker, who is celebrating Black History Month by showcasing prominent and emerging Black talent, is spearheading this project.

Kelly, who spent several years at advertising agencies including Burrell, Della Femina Travisano & Partners, TracyLocke, and Wells Rich Greene, served as the multicultural advertising manager for American Family Mutual Insurance in 2002. Deborah E. Battle, who was the person responsible for multicultural marketing at the company during that time, managed the campaign alongside Kelly.

Following her work on the 2002 Black History Month campaign, Kelly went on to serve in executive roles at Walmart. Her work on the campaign is now being celebrated as the first highlight of Derek Walker's project, which aims to recognize and honor Black talent in the advertising industry.

This year, Kelly is being celebrated on the first day of Black History Month, marking a fitting tribute to her significant contributions to the industry. The occasion serves as a reminder of the importance of highlighting prominent and emerging Black talent, and of the impact that such campaigns can have on the industry and on society as a whole.
