Athletics Director Claude English of Park University Announces His Decision to Retire
Claude English Retires as Director of Athletics at Park University
Claude English, a legendary figure in the world of sports, has announced his retirement as the Director of Athletics at Park University, effective August 13, 2021. During his tenure, English has left an indelible mark on the University's athletic program, guiding it to numerous accolades and establishing new sports programs.
English's career at Park University began in 1992, when he took on the role of the men's basketball head coach. His coaching tenure spanned over a decade, during which he compiled the second-most victories in Park University history. In recognition of his contributions, English was inducted into the Park University Athletics Wall of Honor in 2015, as part of the inaugural class.
Under English's leadership, Park University's athletics programs flourished. The University received seven NAIA national volleyball championships and 79 conference championships, earning a reputation as a formidable force in collegiate sports. English also expanded the sports portfolio by introducing four new programs: men's baseball and golf, and women's beach volleyball and golf.
English's impact extended beyond the field, as he was honored as the AMC Coach of the Year twice and led the team to the NAIA Division I national semifinals in 1997-98. His achievements were recognised not only at Park University but also on a wider scale. In 2010, he was inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Two years later, he was inducted into the Chattahoochee Valley (Ala./Ga.) Sports Hall of Fame.
In 2011, English's accomplishments were further honoured when he was inducted into the Legends Hall of Fame for the Mother Mary Mission, Phenix City, Ala., and in 2015, he was inducted into the Park University Athletics Wall of Honor.
As English steps down from his role, Jayme Uden, Ed.D., associate vice president and dean of students, will serve as the acting director of athletics. A ceremony to honour English is expected to be held on the University's Parkville Campus sometime this fall.
While the search for a new director of athletics begins, it is clear that Claude English's contributions to Park University athletics will be remembered for years to come. His legacy as a coach, administrator, and sports pioneer will continue to inspire future generations of athletes.
