A Kim's Unexpected Journey: Askhat Shakharov, the Akim of Aktobe Region, Opens Up About His Past and Ambitions

Ever dreamed of becoming a region's leader? Askhat Shakharov, the current Akim of Aktobe Region, didn't. Here's his captivating tale.

"As a kid, I didn't wish for a political career, more like reaching for the stars! In school, my peers and I aspired to be astronauts or soldiers, not akims. My folks nudged me towards medicine – my dad worked as an ambulance driver, and my mom was a medical worker. I yearned to be a doctor," shares Askhat.

He recalls his fondest childhood memory, remarking,

"Getting a bicycle was a huge thrill. Going out with my dad was always a blast. Back in the 80s-90s, we'd head to the stadium to root for 'Aktubinec' football team. It felt like a grand event. We'd eat ice cream in cups and relish the excitement.

We had one section in the village, and the competition was fierce. You yearned to stand out. We only studied German and exchanged letters with peers from Germany. There wasn't much choice back then, but we jumped at the opportunity.

In sports, I aimed to prove myself. Not everything came easy. I understood I had to work harder to reap rewards. The more effort you put in, the better the results," reflects the Akim.

Askhat Shakharov assumed the Aktobe region leadership role in September 2023. Prior to this, he was a physical education teacher, an international economist, a university educator, the director of the center for preparing Olympic reserves, a district akim in western Kazakhstan, and the head of the Bayterek district in ZKO.

His extraordinary sports achievements include being a Merited Master of Sports in judo and sambo, and holding several prestigious awards, such as being a three-time world champion in sambo and competing in the Sydney Olympics.

Interestingly, Askhat's career highlights don't shed light on his aspirations to become an akim earlier in his life. Instead, recent activities reveal his focus on regional development projects, fostering transit routes between China and Europe via cargo airline expansions.

His leadership and economic strategies have been showcased at international forums like the Shanxi business forum in China. While his past aspires to space travel and medical careers, his present demonstrates a dedication to the growth and prosperity of Aktobe region.
