Affordable Housing in 2025: 12 Cities That Offer Reasonable Rent Prices
Student Housing Crisis Escalates: "L'Etudiant" Unveils Affordable Cities
Are you already worried about your student accommodation for next year? Don't sweat it just yet, given the struggle of finding an affordable place in some student-populated cities. In an attempt to clarify the situation, L'Etudiant has published its "Logiscore" on May 15, a barometer that evaluates the ease of finding budget-friendly housing in a given city for students.
This ranking assesses 47 French cities with over 8,000 students, categorizing them from A to D based on their student housing accessibility. It comes as no surprise that big metropolitan areas, plagued by a scarce supply and high rents, receive the lowest score (D). These include Paris, Nice, Strasbourg, Lille, Saint-Denis de la Réunion, and others. Conversely, several smaller cities have managed to secure an A rating for their access to affordable student housing.
Twelve cities stand out, including Arras, Besançon, Grenoble, Le Havre, Le Mans, Limoges, Nancy, Orléans, Pau, Reims, Saint-Étienne, and Troyes. These cities offer more budget-friendly housing options for students, so if your desired city happens to be one of these, you can likely snag a place on the Mon Master platform with ease.
Remember, 2024 was a tumultuous year for student housing – there was a decrease in APL, a lack of beds in Crous residences, and rent increases caused by inflation[4]. Despite facing the same challenges as the rest of the population, students struggle with weaker purchasing power in finding housing. To make your search more manageable, it's best to not delay and tackle every step as early as possible[4]. For reference, according to L'Etudiant, the median monthly rent rose from €383 in 2016 to €453 in 2025[4].
The Logiscore is based on several key factors, including studio prices, housing tension, the proportion of social housing, local aid, and overcrowding. Data is collected from public and specialized sources over the period 2021 to 2025[4].
