Alexandria City Public Schools Kick Off 2025-26 Academic Year
Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) is gearing up for the 2025-26 academic year, with students returning to classes on various dates throughout August and September.
The school year commences on August 18 for 17 out of 18 schools, with Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School starting classes on July 21 as it operates on a modified calendar. Tucker Elementary, along with other schools on a modified calendar, offers remediation and enrichment classes during breaks to help reduce learning loss and improve student performance, particularly in reading and math.
Back-to-school nights are scheduled throughout August and September for ACPS families. These events provide an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet teachers, learn about the school's expectations, and discuss their child's progress. The back-to-school nights scheduled for August 26 include events at various schools, such as the Early Childhood Center, George Mason Elementary School, and John Adams Elementary School.
For students at traditional calendar schools with incoming kindergarteners, a "Step Up to Kindergarten" orientation is scheduled for Friday, providing a final opportunity to familiarize themselves with their schools before the first day of school.
Alexandria City Public Schools serves more than 16,335 students this year, representing 127 native languages. The district has a staff of over 2,200 employees.
Schools using modified calendars, like Tucker Elementary, have shorter breaks and extended learning opportunities during those breaks. This approach has been associated with increased student attendance, fewer discipline problems, and reduced dropout rates.
Events are scheduled at several schools throughout September. Francis C. Hammond Middle School and George Washington Middle School will have events on Sept. 18. ACHS Minnie Howard Campus, including early childhood programs, will have an event on Sept. 11. ACHS Chance for Change Campus will also have an event on Sept. 11. Alexandria City High School King Street Campus will have an event on Sept. 10. Patrick Henry K-8 School will have events for grades 5-8 on Sept. 9, and for grades K-4 on Sept. 8.
The complete 2025-26 academic calendar is available on the ACPS website. For more information about back-to-school events and other ACPS news, visit the ACPS website or contact your child's school directly.
It's an exciting time for students, parents, and staff as ACPS begins another academic year. Let's make it a successful one!
